Workers Compensation Coverage for International Workers

Peter Guinther, HR Administrator, for BIC US World Missions reached out with a question that he gave me permission to push out via the Forum to get input from other MASP members who have international workers. Peter noted the following:

"BIC U.S. World Missions is considering switching our Workers Compensation coverage for our international missionaries from the Hartford to Brotherhood Mutual. The coverage seems to be very expensive for very little practical use, other than keeping legally compliant."

If you're willing to share, I know Peter (and I'm assuming others, too,) would be interested in learning what other Member organizations are doing to provide Workers Compensation coverage for their international missionaries. If you're open to sharing what your organization does or you have additional comments or questions related to this topic, please share via a comment to this post. Thanks!

Thank you Conrad for sharing your response. Your thoughts are very much in line with ours, especially since Workers' Compensation policies tend to only compensate at a rate of 2/3rds of lost wages, which would make a missionary's compensation fairly small if they go on WC, because they are already living a simple lifestyle with needs based compensation. My greatest hesitancy to going this direction is whether this meets the legal PA and federal requirements for WC coverage.

Mental Health Benefits

A member organization reached out to me asking if I know what other member organizations are providing in relation to mental health benefits either within their health plan or through other benefits/vendors. Following is the note they invited me to share with the MASP member organizations to learn what others are doing and/or have found helpful:

"As we continue to evaluate what staff need from a health plan, we continue to hear a rising emphasis on strong and accessible mental health benefits. We are interested in hearing how you support mental health in your health plans or through other benefits/vendors. Are there ways that you offer additional or increased benefits outside of in-network and in-person mental health counseling?"

Thanks for any insights or resources that you're willing to share!

TotalCare EAP - This second post is to share some info about TotalCare EAP. The only thing I know about them is from some correspondence I've had with Jonathan Coddington at LD&B. I asked him if he's found any mental health benefit providers (either virtual or otherwise) that he's found that Employers Health Risk Consortium clients are happy with. He responded that mental health seems to be a conundrum for many employers right now. He said he is currently vetting this vendor out of NY and he passed along some info to me. I'll upload some flyers Jonathan passed along to me about the vendor. He also forwarded info on a demo for the website and an orientation video. Those are:

Orientation Video (5 min)-

That's pretty much all I know about this vendor but thought I'd pass it along as Jonathan has a good knack for finding helpful resources. If anyone has interest in exploring this further feel free to reach out to the vendor directly or let me know and I can see what might be available if we'd coordinate access through the MASP.

This Forum - a helpful resource or not? Feedback welcomed!

Over the years there have been requests for some mechanism that would facilitate sharing of questions, resources, and knowledge among MASP member organizations. I received a request from one of the member organizations recently inquiring what other members are doing to support mental health in their health plans or through other benefits/vendors. I thought this would be a good opportunity to test whether a Forum page on the Members-Only section of our website would allow interaction among the members who are interested in this topic while not overwhelming the inboxes of those who are not interested.

If you're visiting this Forum page I'd welcome your evaluation as to whether you find this format/mechanism helpful or not. Feel free to comment on this post as a way to provide your feedback. Or alternately you can send me an email at Keith@mutualaidsharingplan.org.

Great question Meg. I'm learning as I go on this :-). From my research it appears Wix Forums allows you to follow posts that you view as well as "categories." Initially I only had one category of "general discussion." I added a "New Topic" category, so now when I visit the Forum page it shows both categories. Hopefully you'll see where you can choose to follow the "New Topic" category. Anyone who does that should receive notification when a new post is made to that category. Following is a link that may be helpful Wix Forum: Customizing Forum Notifications | Help Center | Wix.com
